The Whitefish, MT native Maggie Voisin has been skiing since she could walk and taking medals home since she was old enough to compete. A three-time Olympian, seven-time X-Games medalist, and 10 year vet on the US Freeski team, Voisin found more success by the age of 25 than most skiers find in their entire career. Her contribution to the culture has been undeniable. After shaping the competitive scene for many years, Maggie has now taken a step back to focus on different aspects of the sport. The backcountry isn’t safe with this phenom on the loose…
What’s the reason you started skiing?
Like many people, I started skiing because of my parents. I am from a small ski town in northwest Montana, and that's how my family filled the winter months.
If you weren’t a pro skier, what would you be doing?
Oh gosh, this is a great question and a tough one. I hate to have a cliche answer, but I can't see myself doing anything outside of skiing. If I hadn't competitively skied for the last several years, I still think I would have found a way to make skiing my life. It's been everything to me since I can remember.
Top tip for staying healthy?
I've unfortunately experienced lots of injuries. For staying healthy, I’m all about cross-training. I think it should be individual to the person. Move in a way you enjoy that feels good for you, don’t be afraid to mix it up, and keep it consistent. For me, I enjoy and prioritize strength training, yoga, hiking, and biking. I'm passionate about nutrition as well and I feel the best when I'm eating whole foods. Not only am I focused on my physical health, but getting my mind right plays a huge role in my overall well-being. Being in nature is always number one for me, along with meditation, breath work, and nervous system regulating exercises. A combination of all those things make me feel my best.
What’s the last book you read?
The Nightingale by Kristin Hannah. It's a must-read if you enjoy historical fiction novels.
What are 3 things you can’t leave home without?
I am the biggest over-packer and I will do anything to bring along as much of my stuff as possible. But the three things that I can't leave home without are all my favorite snacks. Lots and lots of snacks. The last two as of late are a good book and then something like my oil diffuser to make me feel at home on a long trip away.
You could have one superpower, what would it be?
The superpower I would choose is probably time travel. Does that even count, haha? I just think it would be really fun.
What’s your favorite trick to do?
My favorite trick will forever be a rodeo 540.
Where’s your favorite place to travel?
To be honest I don't have a favorite place to travel. I've been extremely fortunate to travel all over the world and what I love most is how individual and unique each place is. If I had to pick a few favorite spots I'd have to say New Zealand, Europe and British Columbia are at the top of my list.
What’s your favorite BlackStrap product?
My favorite BlackStrap products that I am currently sporting out in the mountains are the Expedition Hood Balaclava and the Dual Layer Tube Neck Warmer.
What’s your favorite thing about skiing for BlackStrap?
What got me excited about working with BlackStrap is, first off, that I've been rocking their balaclavas for years. I love their products, and it’s an honor to be a part of the team. But what really got me excited was their enthusiasm for the direction I am taking my career. It means everything to be part of a brand that truly believes in my passions and a new vision for the future.
